General Principles:
The Northwest PC Link Acceptable Use Policy has been formulated with the following
goals in mind:
Ensure security, reliability and privacy of The Northwest PC Link's systems and network,
and the networks and systems of others
Avoid situations that may cause The Northwest PC Link to incur civil liability
Maintain the image and reputation of The Northwest PC Link as a responsible provider
Preserve the value of Internet resources as a conduit for free expression
Encourage the responsible use of net resources
Discouraging practices which degrade the usability of network resources and thus the value
of Internet services
Preserve the privacy and security of individual users.
All Users and Members of The Northwest PC Link must abide by these rules or
risk termination of accounts without warning.
Permitted Uses:
All uses are permitted except as prohibited below.
Prohibited Uses:
The following actions are defined as "system abuse" and are strictly
prohibited. The examples named in this list are
non-exclusive, and are provided solely for guidance to The Northwest PC Link users. If you
are unsure whether any contemplated use
or action is permitted, please send mail to support@npl.com
and we will assist you.
Please note that the actions listed below are also not permitted from other Internet
Service Providers on behalf of or to
advertise any service hosted by The Northwest PC Link, or connected via the LightRealm
network.
Common Abuses:
Sending large numbers of unsolicited mail messages, including the sending of
"junk mail" or other advertising material to
individuals who did not specifically request such material.
Posting the same or similar message to large numbers of Usenet newsgroups.
System and Network:
Attempts to circumvent user authentication or security of any host, network, or
account ("cracking").
Attempts to interfere with or deny service to any user or any host.
Unix Shell:
Use of any program/script/command, or sending messages of any kind, designed to
interfere with a users terminal session, via
any means, locally or by the Internet.
Attempts to circumvent the idle daemon or time charges accounting, or attempts to run
programs while not logged in by any
method.
Repeated running of CPU-intensive user-compiled programs which negatively impact other
system users.
WWW (World Wide Web):
User Agrees NOT to publish any content which promotes or advertises:
Tobacco
Alcohol
Racism
Sex
Mail:
Sending large numbers of unsolicited mail messages (i.e. "junk mail").
Harassment, whether through language, frequency, or size of messages.
Forging of header information.
Using a Northwest PC Link account to collect replies to messages sent from another
provider which violate these rules or those of
that provider.
Forwarding of "chain letters" (multiple forwarding) of any type.
Usenet Newsgroups:
Posting the same or similar message to large numbers of newsgroups.
Posting chain letters of any type.
Posting encoded binary files to newsgroups not specifically named for that purpose.
Cancellation or super ceding of posts other than your own.
Forging of header information.
Solicitation of mail for any other e-mail address other than that of the poster's
Northwest PC Link account or service, with intent to
harass or to collect replies after Northwest PC Link's service is terminated.
IRC (Internet Relay Chat):
Use of IRC scripts or programs that will interfere with or deny service to other
users on any server or host.
Running or attempting to run any irc robot or server.
Running or attempting to run any irc process when not logged in.
Exceptions: Newsgroup moderators are exempt from certain
restrictions in the normal course of newsgroup moderation.
